Deborah White is the founding director of Distant Oaks. She holds a degree in medieval and Renaissance vocal music and is a current grant recipient in the study of medieval Celtic music. Deborah is a popular performer at numerous Celtic and historical events throughout Northern and Central California, with both Distant Oaks and the White Cockade, an ensemble composed of herself and her sons, Jared and Shayne White, who perform on historical wind instruments, Scottish smallpipes and Celtic harp. Distant Oaks has recently released a compact disk of Celtic and Renaissance music, Dance to Bright Steel, on the Northern Wind label.
Jared White is a frequent performer at Celtic and historical events throughout Northern and Central California with both the White Cockade and Distant Oaks, and is a featured artist on Distant Oaks' new recording. He is currently studying recorder with Kit Higginson and Scottish smallpipes with John Creager.
Shayne White is a first-place winner at the Victorian Rose Scottish Games harp competition, held in October 1994. He performs with the White Cockade and was recently awarded a Bay Area Folk Harp Society scholarship. Shayne studies with Cheryl Ann Fulton, world-renowned Medieval harper.
Kevin Toney is a founding member of Distant Oaks, and those of you who are regular attendees at Scottish, Celtic and historical events may have been privileged to hear Kevin's unprecedented performances. He is also a master teacher of bodhran technique.
John Creager has been playing bagpipes for more than 30 years, and his musical skills include performance on the Great Highland pipes, Scottish smallpipes, and Spanish, French and Swedish bagpipes. He is also director of the Hamish Moore Summer School of Cauld Wind Piping, held in Santa Rosa in July. John frequently performs with Distant Oaks and is featured on their new recording.
