He could easily specialize in playing the Scottish Highland bagpipes, or simply be satisfied with playing his elaborate set of Irish pipes. But, he enjoys taking his audiences on a tour of civilization by way of the world of the bagpipes.
The pipes have existed for more than 5,000 years in one form or another. A simple pair of cane stalks into which holes were bored, called an Arguhl, was played by the ancient Egyptians. When plaayed by Folsom, they sound uncannily like the bagpipes. Around 1000 AD people began attaching a bag made of goat skin in which to trap the air, to make the drone and chanter pipes resonate. Thus was born the bagpipe.
Once invented, the bagpipe became instantly popular, spreading throughout a wide range of cultures, from Turkey, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Italy, and Spain to Ireland, Wales and Scsotland. Sean plays oll of these, and more!
Not satisfied with pipes alone, Sean is also known for his virtuosity in stringed instruments and the hurdy-gurdy. He performs internationally from New Zealand to France from his homebase in Fort Bragg, California. Contact Sean Folsom at: (707)964-6651.
