Plenty of shade, plenty of sun- all things considered, the 1996 Monterey Scottish/Irish Festival and Highland Games couldn't have had better weather.
The Parade of the Clans is always a crowd-pleaser. These tartaned lads and lassies march from the Avenue of the Clans, down Glenfinnan Walk, to Bannockburn Arena, for opening ceremonies.
Hours of practice make perfect- or, as nearly so as possible. These pipers are readying themselves for the Band Competition at Monterey on Sunday, August 4, 1996.
Ever wondered how a pipe band's snare drummers practice all at once without taking over the entire neighborhood? Here's how...
And, here's what it all comes down to: the pipes are in tune, the snares and tenors in perfect unison, the bass with just the right reverb- and the pressure's on- because there's that judge with the clipboard!
Tegan Yip, a Beginner Highland Dancer, gives the crowd a look at her version of the Scottish Lilt during Sunday's competition.
There's a good reason Scottish t-shirt shops sell shirts with the message "Happiness is not kicking your sword!"
Although the Monterey Games is heavily Scottish in both history and tradition, there's still room for the Irish. These step dancers put on a demonstration during lunch break at Sunday's competition.
John Taylor, always a favorite with the fiddle, was a featured performer in 1996 along with Celtic folksinger Ed Miller. They'll both appear at the Loch Lomond Games on October 5, 1996.
