Country Dancing
Scottish Country Dance is the social dance of Scotland which developed during the 17th and 18th Centuries and has since spread throughout the world. Dancing is done with a partner in groups of six or eight dancers (called a 'set'). Yet, one does
not need to bring a partner to attend classes, parties or balls. The dancers move in interweaving patterns, interacting with one another as the dance flows from one figure to the next. Because of its social nature, Scottish Country Dance encourages
teamwork, enjoyment of the music, and the people with whom one dances.
In the States, not only did many musical styles and traditions translate from the Scottish reels and strathspeys into Appalachian bluegrass-
so did Scottish Country Dance come over the water and influence heavily the development of what we know today as Square Dancing.
