Wearing the Fraser tartan, the 53rd Street/Cabar Feidh Pipe Band is led by Pipe Major Alan Weidlich and Drum Sergeant John Davis. The band's name represents the combination of two prominent southern California pipe bands: Cabar Feidh and 53rd Street. Cabar Feidh, formed in 1976, was an active participant in Highland Games in California and Arizona throughout its history. 53rd Street, which made the ambitious trip to Scotland to compete in the World Championships in 1989, moved up to Grade II in a few years.
In 1993, the 53rd Street/Cabar Feidh successfully completed its first year, competing at the Highland Games in Costa Mesa, Seattle and Santa Rosa. Since that year, the band has continued the traditions of its predecessors by offering instruction in piping and drumming, and by competing in Grade II at the Highland Games held in Costa Mesa, San Marcos, Monterey and Pleasanton. In addition, the band has travelled to the Seattle Scottish Highland Games, the WUSPBA Championships in Reno, and, most recently, in April of this year, to Vancouver for the B.C. Pipers 64th Annual Gathering.
53rd Street/Cabar Feidh practices in Glendora and Studio City and welcomes pipers and drummers who are interested in performing with the band. For more information, contact P/M Alan Weidlich: (818)242-5802.
