Peel Regional Police Pipe Band (Grade I)

The Peel Regional Police Pipe Band was formed in 1976 with the assistance of the then Board of Commissioners of Police. The band became fully operational in early 1978 and since that date has proudly worn the distinctive "Red MacPherson" tartan.

The band is presently under the guidance of Honorary Chieftain, Deputy of Police, James Wingate, and the administrative direction of Inspector Blair Clevely through the band lisason Officer, Constable Malcolm Bow. The band is comprised of mostly civilian volunteers from the community.

The band started as a Grade IV band, which is the lowest level, but soon proved itself by winning the overall championship in this grade in 1980. Since that time the band has never looked back and, over the next twelve years, won almost every championship title in Grades II, III and IV. Along with this the band has continued to be a very popular attraction at many community events, parades, ceremonies and police functions. The band also regularly participates in various charitable events.

1993 was a special year for the Peel Regional Police Pipe Band when it amalgamated with and absorbed the Grade I North American Championship, Toronto & District Caledonia Pipe Band. At this point the "New and Improved PRPPB reached the pinnacle of the pipe band scene, earning Grade I status. This is the highest level attainable by a pipe band. Within the several thousand pipe bands in North America, only eight are presently at this level.

Some of the highlights over the years have included:

The band proudly presents an annual concert entitled "An Evening of World Class Piping" which features a top soloist recital along with the band's performance. This is truly an evening of great entertainment and is held in conjunction with "Police Week."

The Peel Regional Police Pipe Band is under the musical direction of Pipe Major Michael Gray who took over as Pipe Major in November, 1995. Michael brings an abundance of talent and strong leadership from his many years with the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band and a very successful solo career in both Scotland and Canada. Michael's leadership is further bolstered by Pipe Sergeant John Elliot and Leading Drummer Craig Stewart. John was the P/M of the T&D for many years and remained as Pipe Major after its amalgamation until 1995.

The success of the Peel Regional Pipe Band is due, in part, to the great support received form the Police Services Board, Senior Administration Service members from all ranks and the community at large. The band members look forward to continuing this proud tradition.
