Introduction to Highland Games

In the 'Misted Past of Scottish History' (anything before about 1250 in the Lowlands and 1500 in the Highlands) Highland Games were organized by Clan Chiefs and Tacksmen to select the strongest and best warriors for the battlefield. Tests of strength and skill were given, with prizes awarded to the winners. Malcolm III Canmore (the one who defeated MacBeth in the play) is credited with organizing the first Games at Braemar in the 11th Century. So the story goes... Modern Highland Games include the traditional athletics, bagpipes, Scottish Country Dancing and Scottish Highland Dancing, with Clan societies, vendors, and Living History groups added here in the States.
