Today, his role, while ceremonial, is nonetheless demanding, for he is the marching and discipline leader of the band on parade. The flourishes of his mace indicates both musical and marhing command signals.

In competition, each Drum Major is judged according to the four main functions performed.

• First, as he represents the standard of proper dress, a portion of the score derives from how the uniform is worn: plaid length, height of hose, alignment of belts, height of sporran, angle of bonnet and overall cleanliness.
• Secondly, as the model for correct marching, deportment and military bearing, a portion of the score is based on body posture and flow, grace and general marching carriage.
• Thirdly, a portion of the score derives from proper execution of tempo signals as the Drum Major is required to maintain the marching pace and direction of his band.
• Last, and certainly not least, the Drum Major, as vanguard of the band, is judged in showmanship in the proper flourishing of his mace.
